The ED on Friday arrested Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal on charges of money laundering in the Rs 538 crore loan taken from Canara Bank. ED interrogated Naresh Goyal throughout the day on Friday.

On November 23 last year, the Mumbai branch of Canara Bank filed a complaint against 74-year-old Naresh Goyal, his wife Anita, and Jet Airways director Gaurang Anand. ED started an investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by CBI.

The bank, in its complaint against the airlines, alleged that out of the total loan amount of Rs 848.86 crore given to the airlines, Rs 538.62 crore was outstanding. Money is distributed to subsidiaries or group companies in various suspicious ways.

In May, CBI had searched the premises of Naresh Goyal and Jet Airways in Mumbai. Coincidentally, on the same day, Jalan Kalrock Consortium (JCK) announced that it had deposited Rs 100 crore in Jet Airways to save the bankrupt airline.

JKC has so far invested Rs 250 crore in Jet Airways. To take over full control of Jet Airways, JKC will have to invest another Rs 100 crore. A three-member NCLAT bench had accepted the JCK request to extend the timeline as well as adjust ₹150 crore from the performance bank guarantee to clear payment of ₹350 crore.
